The original purpose of wrapping up these performances into a concert review that we attend isn’t necessarily for the readers, but mainly for me to remember and have a place for the photos and videos I take at the shows. I can then look back and remember a bit more about the show.
Last night, Allison and I had another opportunity to see one of our favorite bands at the El Rey Theater. Our first Calexico show was in Santa Barbara in the early to mid 2000’s. I can’t seem to remember. See why I need this blog? π These guys and the Avett Brothers are really the only bands that I don’t need to convince Allison to spend the evening on her feet. She goes to other shows, but there usually is more convincing or we are going with other people that she likes hanging out with as well.
The opening act was a singer songwriter from Australia named Julia Jacklin. We really liked her and thought it would be cool to see her sometime on her own somewhere. She played solo on stage with a blonde Fender Telecaster that had a sticker on it that said “You Got This!”.
The main event started promptly at 10pm and I wish I could tell you the order of the songs, but I have a terrible memory (hence this blog) and that is what setlist.fm is for. Suffice to say, the lineup that I saw this time was a mix of the guys we have seen for years and some new members that I am not that familiar with. In the end, it doesn’t matter who is there, it was still fantastic. The Swing House show they did in December had only 4 guys and it was one of my favorite shows.
Some highlights:
They played 16 songs or so.
Music Box was beautifully done.
Nick Urata from Devotchka and another guitarist that I couldn’t make out his name joined in on several songs.
The violinist that came on was spot on as well.
Otherwise, the night was pretty great. We ate at 33Taps in Silver Lake with Allison’s cousins and aunt and uncle while they watched the Caps game (Stanley Cup). See you all soon and enjoy the images and videos! See the gallery.
